Not to fear, it happens to us all.  Sweat drenched mat + post-yoga zombie shuffle out to car + hot summer days in backseat = Yoga Mat teeming with new friends.  Yay.

Luckily, the amazing properties of a few choice essential oils and household items will save the day with their anti-viral, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties – naturally!

There is a concept of synergy in essential oil blending, when a compound is more than the sum of it’s parts.  By mixing two or more essential oils you are creating a chemical compound that is different to any of the component parts, and these synergistic blends are very powerful!

Here are a few easy and inexpensive recipes you can make yourself!

Recipe #1

for the super funky yoga mat

closeup yoga mat22 oz spray bottle
Vinegar – 4 ounces
Vodka – 2 teaspoons
Lavender Essential Oil – 5 drops
Sage Essential Oil – 5 drops
Lemon Essential Oil – 5 drops
Rosemary Essential Oil – 5 drops
Peppermint Essential Oil – 3 drops
Grapefruit Essential Oil – 5 drops
2 cups filtered spring water

First blend the essential oils together in your spray bottle or container. Add in the vodka and shake well for a while, like minutes. Leave it to settle. Then add the vinegar. (The longer you leave the mixture to ‘steep’ the stronger the scent will be.) Pour in the water, and shake it again. Shake it. Shake it-shake it-shake it! Feel free to mix & match the essential oils if you don’t have them all! Prioritize the ones in Recipe #2 for the best results.

Recipe #2

for the not-as-funky daily upkeep

22 oz spray bottle
Lavender Essential Oil – 5 drops
Tea Tree Essential Oil – 5 drops
Eucalyptus Essential Oil – 5 drops
Peppermint Essential OIl – 3 drops
2 cups filtered spring water

Similar process, mix the essential oils first, shaking vigorously to integrate.

Instructions for Use:

With both recipes, spray liberally onto your mat in an even manner and let it work for a few minutes. Wipe clean with a damp hand towel. Allow to air dry. Repeat often – don’t be that guy!
