Yoga Nidra is one of the oldest forms of yoga with ancient texts describing the benefits of the practice dating back thousands of years.
Yoga Nidra, or lucid sleeping is among the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness. In normal sleep we lose track of ourselves, but in Yoga Nidra, while consciousness of the world is dim and relaxation is deep, there remains an inward lucidity and experiences may be absorbed to be recalled later.
The practice of Yoga Nidra has been found to greatly reduce stress and anxiety, and has even been used for extreme cases, such as soldiers of war coping with PTSD. Yoga Nidra refers to the conscious awareness of the deep sleep state, referred to as prajna in Mandukya Upanishad.
Yin Yoga works with the more subtle tissues in the body, and frees up energetic blockages along the nadis. The connective tissue, and fascia specifically, are the super highway of the flow of prana in the body, and long held tension, fatigue, injury and trauma can stop the proper flow of this energy – a precursor to disease.
